Gordon’s Bay Yacht Club (GBYC) recently secured a multi-year sponsorship deal with Shane’s @ 99 on Beach, a prominent property development in Strand, for its flagship sailing event, the Gaul Regatta. The agreement, spanning five years, ensures the continuity of this premier sailing event in the Helderberg region.

Tim Beardmore, the owner of Shane’s @ 99 on Beach, is not only a local businessman but also an avid sailor who understands the significance of the Gaul Regatta. Having sailed extensively himself, including voyages to Mozambique and across the Atlantic, Beardmore appreciates the parallels between his renovation project and the revitalization of the regatta. He views both endeavors as processes of rejuvenation, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the recent pandemic. Beardmore's renovation of 99 Beach Road aims to stimulate the local economy by creating nearly 100 job opportunities, mirroring the Gaul Regatta's role in reviving sailing and promoting the maritime leisure economy in the area.

Scheduled to open on October 1, 2023, the renovated building will house Kapstadt Brauhaus, Ocean Basket, and New York Slice, contributing further to the economic revitalization of the area. Named after Beardmore’s resilient son, Shane, who defied medical odds to celebrate his 18th birthday, the building embodies the spirit of perseverance and determination.

For GBYC Commodore Jana Loubser, the sponsorship represents a significant moment for sailing in the Helderberg region, especially considering the financial strain faced by many sailing clubs post-pandemic. The partnership underscores the value local businesses place on the Gaul Regatta's prestige and heritage, recognizing its role in sustaining the Gordon’s Bay harbor economy and benefiting the wider community.

Ken Newton, Chair of the Gaul Regatta organizing committee, expressed delight at the sponsorship deal, emphasizing the increasing costs of hosting such events and the critical role of sponsors in ensuring their continuation. Alongside Shane’s @ 99 on Beach and SA Sailing, several other businesses, including MDL Logistics, 3D Cooling, Ullman Sails, and Felco, have extended their support to the regatta.

Set to take place from July 28 to 30, the Shane’s GBYC Gaul Regatta promises intense competition among sailing enthusiasts. Defending champion Time Out faces stiff competition from contenders like Blue Tango II and Royal Flush, with various sailing clubs expected to participate, further enriching the event's competitive spirit and community engagement.
