Cruise to round off the year

The GBYC hosted its Closing Cruise with Commodore Jana Loubser on Plumbob leading a leisurely sail around Gordon’s Bay on Saturday 11 December.

A total of 17 vessels – 14 yachts and three power vessels – took part in the event. Afterwards, the sailors retired to the clubhouse for fish and chips, courtesy of the club galley.

The event wasn’t without incident, however. The 37 ft cruiser Libre ran hard aground on the reefs near Harbour Island after a motor failure, while the Spirit 28 Gia suffered a major rigging failure.

GBYC and the skippers involved extended their thanks to the crew of the National Sea Rescue Institute’s Station 9 (Gordon’s Bay), who responded to both emergencies, as well as to power vessel skippers Alan Dawson (Edelweiss) and Gys Liebenberg (Old Brown) who rendered immediate assistance. Fortunately no-one was injured and neither vessel is damaged beyond repair.
